Vacant Farmhouse and Outbuildings – 0.55 Ha (1.36 Acres)

Muirkirk (population approx. 1800) lies between Douglas and Cumnock on the A70 which runs between Ayr and Edinburgh. At one time it was a hive of coal and iron industry, with Ayrshire’s first ironworks established in the town in 1787 surviving into the 20th century. The Kames colliery was established in 1799 and closed in 1966. The town has a rich history in connection with the Scottish Covenanters and was the first town in Britain to have gas lighting. Today the town’s main focus in on tourism, the area surrounding Muirkirk is one of scenic beauty and provides a haven for outdoor recreation including walking and fishing. There is a selection of everyday amenities, sports facilities and primary schooling. There is secondary schooling at Cumnock and Auchinleck. The nearest train station is in New Cumnock. The area is well situated for access to Ayr and via the M74 to Glasgow and East Kilbride.

Travelling from Glasgow take the M74 south exiting at junction 11 and follow the B7078 and then the A70 towards Ayr. Pass through Douglas and after approx. 10.5 miles you will enter Muirkirk. Just before leaving the village and immediately before the parking layby/turning area on the left, turn left over a small bridge crossing the River Ayr. Follow this track and the farmhouse can be seen on the right hand side. Grid Ref: NS6881926327.
