Langholm is a small town on the A7 tourist route that runs through Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels to Edinburgh, 72 miles away. Southwards the Border with England is just 8 miles and Carlisle is 32 miles. Langholm is in reiver country that was dominated by the Clan Armstrong in past times. The poet Hugh McDiarmid was born in the town and Thomas Telford, the renowned civil engineer, was born in nearby Glendinning. The town has a population of 2,300 and its main economic activities are forestry, agriculture and textiles. Edinburgh Woollen Mills have announced they are replacing their headquarters function with an improved visitor experience at their mills in the town.
