Former bank premises in Wick to go under the hammer

SVA Property Auctions, Scotland’s independent property auction company, will be hosting its next  live-streamed auction on Wednesday 22nd February, with remote bidding via an on-line portal as well as traditional proxy bidding or telephone bidding.

The auction features a portfolio of 10 lots, including four from regular vendor Scottish Water as part of their ongoing sale of surplus assets. Scottish Water’s lots range from redundant water tank sites in Huntly and Barthol Chapel to former reservoir sites in Kilbirnie and Poolewe with guide prices ranging from £3,000 to £12,500.

One of the other highlights of the  auction is an opportunity to breathe  new life into the historic  B-listed Cumberland Barracks building in Coupar Angus. Formerly known as Yeomanry Barracks,  the three storey L-shaped building dates back to the mid 1700s and was used by the British Army during the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellions. Today, the building, which is currently vacant, contains five one-bedroomed flats and one bedsit, and was at least partially occupied up until 2020. The Sellers, Perth and Kinross Council have completed various refurbishment and maintenance projects on the building over the years, most recently replacing the coping stones and re-coating the building’s exterior. All flats, except the bedside consist of a living room, bedroom, fitted kitchen units, bathroom or shower room and have electric heating and double-glazed sash and case windows. Says SVA Property Director and auctioneer Shaun Vigers: “These flats are a one off opportunity to create six cosy homes in an historic building, close to local amenities and the surrounding road network. The properties are in reasonable condition and with a guide price of between £240,000 – £250,000 for the entire block, we expect this lot to be snapped up for a buy to let project or for further refurbishment and sale to first time buyers.”

Another lot which offers tremendous scope for re-development is the former bank premises on Bridge Street in Wick. The property comprises the ground and basement floors of an impressive three storey and basement Category B-listed building, featuring ornate stone carving on the frontage and a pitched slate roof. The main door at street level opens up into a large, high-ceilinged ground floor space, which is currently subdivided but could easily be opened up. The basement area comprises toilets, a staff tea preparation area, two store rooms and a large walk in safe. The lot, which is guided at £55,000, sits in a prominent location in the town and offers considerable potential for continued use as a commercial environment.
